Blocked drain warning signs

Blocked drain warning signs

How do I know if the main drain is blocked?

Several fixtures draining slowly, gurgling from different rooms, wastewater rising in an outside gully and a full inspection chamber all point towards a restriction in the main private drain.

Why does my toilet gurgle when the sink empties?

Restricted flow is displacing air through another fixture. The blockage may sit in a shared branch pipe, soil stack or underground drain.

Why do my drains smell even when water still flows?

A partial blockage can hold decaying material. Smells can also come from a dry trap, failed seal or ventilation issue, so the pattern of symptoms matters.

Can a blockage clear itself?

A soft partial blockage may shift temporarily, but wipes, grease, roots and structural defects usually return. Recurring symptoms should be investigated.

Costs, estimates and attendance

Costs, estimates and attendance

Do you charge to provide an estimate?

There is no charge simply to request a drainage estimate through the site. The proposed work and price should be clear before paid work begins.

Why can the price change between jobs?

Access, pipe length, blockage type, equipment and whether camera work is required all affect the scope. A simple reachable obstruction is different from roots or a damaged buried pipe.

Can you attend the same day?

Same-day attendance may be possible depending on location, workload and urgency. Submit the postcode and symptoms for confirmation.

Is 24-hour attendance available?

The form is open 24 hours a day, but actual out-of-hours attendance must be confirmed by the operating business. The site does not guarantee a response time that has not been agreed.

Clearing methods

What is the difference between rodding and jetting?

Rods push through or retrieve some obstructions. Jetting uses controlled water pressure to clean deposits from the pipe wall and flush loosened material.

Can jetting damage old pipes?

It can if pressure and equipment are used without considering condition. Older, fractured or displaced pipework needs careful assessment.

When is a mechanical drain machine used?

Mechanical cables are often useful on smaller internal waste pipes, tight bends and local sink or toilet branches where water jetting is not appropriate.

Why did the blockage return after it was cleared?

Material may remain on the pipe wall, or the drain may have roots, a displaced joint, low section or crack that catches more waste.

CCTV surveys and repairs

CCTV surveys and repairs

Do I need a CCTV drain survey for every blockage?

No. A first-time straightforward blockage may not need one. Surveys are more useful for recurring problems, suspected damage, purchases and repair planning.

What can a drain camera find?

It can show roots, cracks, holes, displaced joints, scale, grease, silt, foreign objects and sections holding water, subject to access and visibility.

Can a collapsed drain be repaired without digging?

Some cracks and joints can be patched or lined, but severe displacement or collapse usually needs excavation and replacement.

Will a survey show where the pipe runs?

A camera with a sonde can often be traced from the surface to estimate route and depth. It is not a replacement for checking other buried services before digging.

Responsibility and safety

Responsibility and safety

Who owns the drain outside my house?

You are generally responsible for a private drain serving only your property. Severn Trent usually covers shared drains and public sewers. Highway gullies are handled separately.

What should I do if neighbours are blocked too?

That suggests a shared drain or public sewer. Report the symptoms to Severn Trent and explain how many properties are affected.

Is sewage water dangerous?

Yes. Avoid contact, keep children and pets away, stop using affected fixtures and arrange appropriate cleaning after the blockage is controlled.

Can I enter a manhole to clear a blockage?

No. Confined spaces can contain dangerous gases, low oxygen and contaminated water. Only trained people with suitable procedures should enter.

Prevention

Prevention

What should never be flushed?

Do not flush wipes, sanitary products, nappies, cotton buds, kitchen roll, dental floss or other items that do not break down like toilet paper.

How should cooking fat be disposed of?

Allow it to cool, collect it in a container and place it in the appropriate waste. Do not pour oil or grease down the sink.

How often should commercial drains be jetted?

There is no universal interval. It should be based on use, grease or silt loading, previous incidents and inspection findings.

Can tree roots be prevented from returning?

The roots must be removed and the entry point repaired or sealed. Cutting roots alone often gives only temporary relief.

Still not sure what is blocked?

Describe which fixtures are affected, whether an outside chamber is full and whether the problem has happened before.
